When should you switch to summer tires?

When should you switch to summer tires?

Every spring, drivers ask the same question: when is the right time to switch from winter tires to summer tires? The answer depends not only on the calendar. Both legal requirements and actual weather conditions play an important role.

What Does the Law Say?

In Estonia, the use of winter tires is mandatory from December 1 to March 1. Studded tires are allowed from October 1 to March 31.

If weather conditions require it, studded tires may be used until April 30.This means that, according to the law, summer tires can technically be installed already at the beginning of March. However, in practice this is not always the most sensible decision.

Spring Weather Is Unpredictable

Experience shows that rushing to install summer tires in early March is not always a good idea. In Estonia, March and even early April often bring:

  • night frosts

  • wet snow or snowfall

  • slippery road surfaces in the mornings

Summer tires perform best when temperatures stay consistently above +7 °C. If the temperature drops below zero at night, the rubber compound of summer tires becomes harder and road grip decreases significantly.

Recommendation from RehvidPluss.com for Families with Two Cars

If your family has two cars, we recommend a practical solution.

You can install summer tires on one car already in March, especially if most trips are during the daytime and within the city.

On the second car, it is better to keep winter tires until mid-April, when spring weather becomes more stable.

This way, your family always has a car that can be driven safely if spring suddenly brings frost or snow.

When Is the Safest Time to Change Tires?

Considering typical weather conditions in Estonia, the safest time to switch to summer tires is usually the second half of April.

By that time, night frosts have usually ended, daytime temperatures are more stable, and road conditions are more spring-like.

Book Your Tire Change in Advance

In spring, tire replacement services are in very high demand, and auto service schedules fill up quickly.

Therefore, it is recommended to book your tire change in advance, even if you plan to come only in April. This will help you avoid queues and choose a time that suits you best.

Check the Condition of Your Summer Tires Before Installation

Spring tire replacement is a good opportunity to check the condition of your summer tires.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Tread depth. By law it must be at least 1.6 mm, but for safety it is recommended to replace tires when tread depth reaches around 3 mm.

  • Tire age. Even if the tread still looks good, it is not recommended to use tires older than 10 years.

  • Overall condition of the tires, such as cracks, damage, or uneven wear.

If the tires are worn out or too old, it is better to replace them before the season starts. This improves vehicle handling and shortens braking distance.

Summary

Although the law allows summer tires to be installed as early as March, in practice it is better to wait a little. In most cases, the most reasonable time to change tires is the second half of April.

If you are planning your spring tire change, book your appointment in advance to avoid queues during the busiest period.

Have a safe spring drive!
