Why do electric cars need special tyres?

A conventional tyre may work on an electric car, but it wears out faster, makes more noise, and reduces range. EV tyres are designed to solve three main challenges.

Greater mass and torque

The battery of an electric car weighs 400-700 kg, making the car considerably heavier. In addition, the electric motor provides all the torque immediately. EV tyres are designed with a reinforced sidewall and a more durable rubber compound to withstand higher loads and torque without premature wear.

Driving range and energy efficiency

Every kilowatt counts. EV tyres have an extremely low rolling resistance, which means that less energy is used to deform the tyre and more reaches the wheels. The result: a longer range per charge - up to 6% more kilometers on average, according to tests.

5 tips for buying tyres for electric cars

1. Check the load index

Electric cars are significantly heavier than conventional cars. Make sure that the load capacity index of new tyres is at least as high as the load capacity index specified by the car manufacturer. Too low a load capacity index endangers driving safety.

2. Prefer tyres with lower rolling resistance

Rolling resistance directly affects driving range. On the EU tyre label look for the energy efficiency class — A is the best, E is the worst. Each class means a few percent longer (or shorter) driving range.

3. Pay attention to the noise category

Without the engine noise, tyre noise is the most noticeable on an electric car. Look for tyres with an A or B noise rating and with noise-dampening foam inside the tyre.

4. Change all four at once

The high torque of electric vehicles causes uneven tyre wear if the front and rear tyres are of different ages. For best safety always replace all four tyres at the same time.

5. Check tyre pressure regularly

Correct tyre pressure is especially important for electric vehicles. Underinflation increases rolling resistance and reduces range. Check the pressure at least once a month — especially before a long journey.

This is not mandatory, but is highly recommended. Conventional tyres wear out significantly faster on an electric vehicle due to the greater mass and instant torque. EV tyres last longer, make less noise, and save battery life due to lower rolling resistance. In the long run, EV tyres are usually more financially beneficial.

Are EV tyres more expensive than regular tyres?

Do electric cars need different winter tyres?

Yes, EV winter tyres are designed to take into account the increased weight and torque of electric vehicles even in winter conditions. Both studded and slatted winter tyres are available in EV versions. In Estonia, winter tyres are mandatory from December 1 to March 1.
