Michelin – When Only the Best Will Do
Founded in France, Michelin is the world’s second-largest tire manufacturer and one of the most recognizable tire brands globally, with a reputation that extends far beyond the automotive industry. Michelin ranks second only to Bridgestone in size, while surpassing competitors such as Goodyear and Continental. Having served as a tire supplier to numerous Formula One teams over the years, Michelin has become an iconic brand recognized around the world.
Whether you are looking for summer tires, winter tires, or even tires for space exploration vehicles, Michelin delivers premium-quality products for virtually every vehicle and driving condition. Beyond tires, Michelin is also famous for its travel guides and the prestigious Michelin Stars awarded to outstanding restaurants. Just as Michelin tires represent excellence on the road, Michelin-recommended restaurants represent excellence in dining.
Michelin tires consistently achieve outstanding results across all performance categories. This is one of the reasons why many of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers and motorsport organizations choose Michelin as their original equipment supplier. Exceptional performance and a relentless pursuit of excellence are embedded in Michelin’s DNA.
3 Reasons to Choose Michelin Tires
Exceptional Performance in Every CategoryDurability and Premium Quality
Michelin tires are recognized for excelling in nearly every criterion used to evaluate tire performance. Many of Michelin’s flagship models outperform competitors in independent tests, whether it is the Michelin Defender for durability or the Michelin Pilot Super Sport for exceptional handling and extended tread life. A testament to Michelin’s reputation for durability is the fact that the company was selected to manufacture tires for lunar rovers.
Peace of Mind in Every Situation
Premium-quality tires naturally come with a higher price tag, but Michelin tires offer confidence and reliability in virtually any driving condition. Whether you need tires for daily commuting or a track day event, Michelin’s decades of expertise help ensure outstanding performance. The company also places a strong emphasis on safety, allowing drivers to get the most out of their tires with confidence.
Recognized Commitment to Innovation and Ethics
Michelin is respected not only for producing high-quality tires but also for its continuous innovation, research and development efforts, and responsible business practices. The company consistently invests in advancing tire technology while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Over the years, Michelin has introduced numerous concept vehicles and experimental technologies, many of which have eventually found their way into production models.
Michelin’s history dates back to 1889, when the Michelin brothers helped a cyclist repair a punctured bicycle tire at their agricultural equipment factory. At the time, repairing a tire that was glued to the wheel rim took more than three hours and required overnight drying. The following day, the tire went flat again after only a few hundred meters. This experience inspired the brothers to develop a tire that did not need to be glued to the rim.
In 1891, Michelin obtained its first patent for a removable pneumatic tire that could be mounted without adhesive. From that point forward, the company continuously worked on developing and improving tire technology. In 1934, Michelin introduced a tire capable of continuing to operate after a puncture using a special foam lining—a concept now known as run-flat tire technology.
Michelin also developed one of the most important innovations in tire history: the radial tire. The company received the patent for this groundbreaking design in 1946. The invention of the radial tire helped Michelin become one of the world’s leading tire manufacturers and paved the way for the opening of its first North American sales office in 1968. By 1989, Michelin had achieved a 10% share of the U.S. original equipment tire market.
While the outdated bias-ply tire still dominated the U.S. market in 1967, radial tires now account for virtually 100% of the market. Throughout its history, Michelin has alternated between being the world’s largest and second-largest tire manufacturer and today remains second only to Bridgestone in global market size.
