New Pirelli ICE FRICTION™ – Nordic winter under control
02-10-2025 10:58
Pirelli has launched the all-new studless winter tyre ICE FRICTION™, designed specifically for the harsh Nordic climate. The tyre combines top-level safety, best aquaplaning resistance, excellent grip on ice and snow, and surprising driving comfort. ICE FRICTION raises the bar both for conventional drivers and EV owners.
Technology that changes the game
- Bi-Cap Compound – dual-layer rubber: the upper layer gives ice grip, the lower layer ensures stability and lower rolling resistance.
- Virtual tread design – optimised water evacuation significantly reduces aquaplaning risk.
- Advanced siping system – effective in fresh, soft snow as well as compacted snow.
- ELECT™ technology – version tailored for EVs and plug-in hybrids.
- PNCS™ noise-cancelling system – reduces cavity resonance and enhances comfort.
Ultra-quiet and outstandingly labelled
ICE FRICTION is one of the quietest studless tyres on the market. The entire range is rated EU noise class “A” – a level competitors with soft-compound tyres cannot match. This marks a major breakthrough in the studless tyre segment.
Test results confirm success
UTAC (France, 2025):
- Ice: 2nd in braking, 3rd in traction.
- Snow: overall winner in braking and traction.
- Wet: best braking distance in the test.
Vi Bilägare (Sweden, 2025):
- 2nd overall (90 points, just 1 behind Continental VikingContact 8).
- Best aquaplaning resistance

Competitor comparison
- Continental VikingContact 8 – winner in Sweden, but Pirelli was only one point behind.
- Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV – strong in wet braking, but noisier and less balanced.
- Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV – excellent on ice, but less quiet and less versatile.
- Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 – good cornering, weaker in aquaplaning and noise.
Summary
The new Pirelli ICE FRICTION™ is a breakthrough in the studless winter tyre market. It offers top-level safety, ultra-low noise and EV-ready technology.
