Fall is just around the corner: Are your tires ready for the rainy season?
05-08-2026 11:04
August is here, and September is just around the corner.
The approach of fall brings cooler weather, shorter days, and more frequent rain showers. Wet road surfaces mean longer stopping distances and a greater risk of hydroplaning. That’s why now is the perfect time to check the condition of your car’s tires, especially their tread depth.
If you're unsure about the condition of your tires, visit Rehvid Pluss for a FREE tire inspection. Our specialists will assess your tires and let you know whether they're still safe to drive on or if it's time for a replacement.
Although the law allows driving with a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm, tire tests conducted by ADAC, one of Europe’s best-known automobile clubs, show that tire grip on wet roads starts to deteriorate well before reaching this limit. For this reason, many tire manufacturers and experts recommend replacing summer tires when the tread depth reaches approximately 3 mm.
Why does tread depth affect driving safety?
The tire tread channels water away from beneath the tire and helps maintain contact with the road surface. The shallower the tread becomes, the less water the tire can disperse, increasing the risk of hydroplaning.
Worn tires can seriously compromise your safety on wet roads. Tests have shown that, on wet surfaces, braking distances with tires worn down to a tread depth of 1.6 mm can be 10–20 meters longer than with new tires. In practice, this can mean the difference between a safe stop and a traffic accident.
A worn tire can start hydroplaning at much lower speeds than a new one. Therefore, sufficient tread depth is important not only for complying with legal requirements but also for ensuring your own safety and the safety of other road users.
What should you check before the rainy season?
In addition to tread depth, you should also check the following important points before fall:
Tread depth: A minimum tread depth of 3 mm is recommended for better safety.
Even wear: Uneven wear may indicate problems with wheel alignment or the suspension system.
Tire pressure: Correct tire pressure helps maintain proper handling and reduces tire wear.
Tire age: Even a tire with good tread can lose its elasticity and grip over time. Check the DOT code on the tire sidewall. Tires that are more than 8 years old should be inspected regularly and replaced if necessary.
