Spring has finally arrived – the days are longer, the weather is warmer, and the roads are getting drier. This is the sign that tire change season is here. In spring, many drivers think not only about washing their cars and doing technical maintenance but also about when is the right time to switch from winter to summer tires.
The general recommendation is to switch to summer tires when the daily temperature stays consistently above +7°C. The reason is that winter tire rubber compounds are softer and designed to work in cold temperatures – in warmer weather, they wear out faster and become unstable in terms of driving performance. Summer tires, on the other hand, are optimized for higher temperatures, offering better grip, stability, and handling.
Changing your winter tires to summer tires at the right time brings several advantages:
🔧 Better handling and steering feel on dry and wet roads
⛽ Lower fuel consumption due to reduced rolling resistance
🚗 Shorter braking distance on warm and dry road surfaces
🛞 Longer lifespan for winter tires, as rising temperatures increase wear on them
Also, don’t forget the legal requirements – in Estonia, studded tires must be replaced with summer tires by May 1st, but using summer tires is already allowed starting in March. If the weather permits, it’s a good idea to change your tires sooner rather than later – this way you avoid queues and benefit from summer tires when they are most effective.
